Darrell — Regaining Stability

“I never thought I would experience homelessness,” says Darrell. “Now I understand how easily it can happen to anyone.”
 
A lifelong Boston resident, Darrell earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and went on to work as a pest control supervisor for many years. Life took an unexpected turn when he suffered a stroke that led to a back injury. “I had to stop working and take time to recover,” Darrell shares. From that moment, his financial stability began to unravel.
 
“While I was recovering, my mother experienced a double stroke and aneurysm,” Darrell recalls. “She became paralyzed, so I moved in with her and became her full-time caregiver.”
 
When his mother needed 24-hour support, Darrell made the difficult decision to move her into a long-term care facility. “I sold our family home to cover her medical expenses,” he explains. “At that point, I no longer had a place to live. That’s when I turned to Pine Street Inn.”
 
At the Men’s Inn shelter, Darrell found support and community. “Pine Street gave me a safe place to stay while I get back on my feet,” shares Darrell. “I’m working with a case manager to find housing. Since being in shelter, my mother has passed away, but Pine Street’s support is helping get through a difficult time.” Focused on fostering community among shelter guests, Darrell serves on the shelter’s Consumer Advisory Board and plays a key role in welcoming new guests. “I assist in leading the new guest orientation to help newcomers adjust and feel at ease,” he says. “With so much information to absorb, it can be overwhelming. I’ve noticed guests feel more comfortable seeking help after the orientation. Meeting fellow guests reminds them they’re not alone.”
 
After all he has experienced, Darrell remains hopeful. “I’m grateful for the people at Pine Street who care and keep me moving forward,” Darrell smiles. “I’m excited for the day I have a place to call home again.”
