Aldina M. — Enjoying Her Community

Originally from Cape Verde, Aldina M., 64, came to the United States in 2002, becoming homeless six years ago, following a prolonged hospitalization. She had lived in her own apartment for many years, but because of her medical bills, Aldina could no longer afford it.

“I thought about returning to home, but then I learned about Pine Street Inn’s Yawkey House shelter. My case manager worked with me to find an apartment in one of Pine Street’s residences. I’ve been here for three years, and I love it. There are many Cape Verdeans in the neighborhood, which makes me feel at home.”

Aldina brings memories of her childhood into her daily life through her cooking. “I like to make a traditional stew called cachupa,” she says. “It’s made with hominy, beans, cassava, sweet potatoes, and fish or meat. If I have extra food, I put it in the common room so others in the building can help themselves.”

“I take great pride in keeping my apartment clean,” she says. “It’s quiet and peaceful here, and I’ve made a lot of friends in the building. It’s a wonderful community and everyone here is like family.”
