Michael — Finding Strength in Family

Born in Boston, Michael spent most of his childhood in Virginia with his five brothers and two sisters. “My mom is from the South, and we moved to Viriginia when we were young,” Michael shares.

Michael worked alongside his brother at a car dealership, and when the business moved to Florida, Michael followed. “In Virginia, I hung out with the wrong crowd and started doing drugs,” Michael explains. “Florida was a fresh start. I joined a church, and I worked a lot. Things were going well for a while.”

Then his life took a turn. “I relapsed and ended up in jail because of my drug use,” Michael says. “It was a hard lesson, but it made me want to focus on recovery. It’s been almost 20 years since I left that life behind.”

After his release, Michael lived out of his car for a year. “It was frightening,” Michael shares. “My aunt in Boston encouraged me to come live with her. But when she passed away, I was unable to afford rent on my own.”

That’s when Michael turned to Pine Street Inn. “I stayed at the Men’s Inn for 14 months,” says Michael. “My case manager helped me find housing.”

Michael has lived in his apartment for six years. “I was so happy when I first moved in,” he says. “The staff puts on events for us in the building, and it feels like we’re all family.”

Today, Michael is focused on finding a new job. “I’m working with my case manager to apply for a Commercial Driver’s License,” he shares.

When asked what gives him hope, Michael doesn’t hesitate: “My family and friends. Knowing I have people who love me and have my back — that’s something to live for.”

Looking into the holiday season, Michael feels especially thankful for family and his home. “I’m grateful to have my own space,” Michael shares. “I’m thankful I’m in a better place in my life. Pine Street Inn helped me get here, and now I can enjoy the holidays the way they’re meant to be — with family.”
