Jeffrey — Overcoming Life’s Obstacles

Jeffrey learned early that life can be difficult. “I was bullied throughout childhood and navigating a fractured family,” he recalls. “I felt like the kid nobody wanted around.”

He also faced panic attacks and other mental health challenges. “The symptoms were overwhelming — panic attacks, confusion,” he remembers. “I didn’t have the right support system, so I turned to alcohol to cope.” As his symptoms worsened and his drinking increased, Jeffrey found it difficult to hold a job. Money ran out, and eventually, he ended up on the street.

A visit to the hospital changed everything when someone told him about Pine Street Inn. “I walked into the Men’s Inn at the lowest point of my life,” says Jeffrey.

For four years, Jeffrey moved between the shelter and the street. “During that time, my case manager helped me find a recovery program and get me back on my feet,” he says. “She also helped me find an apartment at Pine Street residence in Brookline.”

The transition wasn’t easy. “The first few nights, I slept outside because it was hard adjusting to living in a house,” he admits.

Slowly, Jeffrey found stability. He also discovered a hobby that fills his apartment and life with joy. “I needed something small and fun to keep me busy, so I started collecting Hot Wheels cars,” he says with a smile. “After three years, I have hundreds of them!”

As the holidays approach, Jeffrey reflects on how much Pine Street has helped him. “This time of year can be difficult,” he remarks. “Thanks to Pine Street, the season feels more joyful. The staff organizes games and decorates the building, which helps combat feelings of loneliness.”

“Pine Street saved my life,” Jeffrey says. “Now I’m just trying to make the most of it.”
