Denise — Embracing Change

Nestled in a quiet corner of Jamaica Plain is one of Pine Street Inn’s most unique residences. Pine Street purchased the property in 1998 from a local church that could no longer support the residents.
One of those tenants is Denise. A lifelong caregiver, Denise built her career as a physical therapist, spending 18 years — and counting — providing home care. “My brother had cerebral palsy,” Denise shares. “I wanted to make a difference for people who needed help.”
After years of working long hours, Denise got burned out. “I was a workaholic,” she admits. “I became depressed and was hospitalized.” While in the hospital, Denise lost her job and faced the possibility of losing her home.
“I had always helped others, and now I was the one who needed help,” says Denise. “Someone from a local church let me know about an open room at their supportive housing residence in Jamaica Plain. I was so grateful to move in and get help.”
When Pine Street took over the house, Denise noticed an immediate change. “Before, it was very rigid,” she says. “When Pine Street came, we had more independence, but still had support.”
Pine Street case managers helped Denise connect with a therapist and brought her to appointments. “Having a case manager is helpful,” Denise shares. “They build community by hosting movie and game nights. But sometimes it’s just nice to have someone to talk to after work and decompress.
Denise is clear about the impact Pine Street has had: “Pine Street has helped me through tough times. I’m grateful for the supportive community I have here.”
