Daryl — Stability in Housing

Daryl, a tenant at one of Pine Street Inn’s residences in Dorchester, found the community and stability he craved, but it wasn’t an easy journey.

Originally from Ohio, Daryl and his family moved to Boston when he was young. Despite having a strong foundation growing up, life threw challenges his way leading him to years without a home.

“I became homeless in 2013, after the person I was living with passed away,” Daryl says. “I was working as a cook at the time, but I was living paycheck-to-paycheck and not making enough money to cover rent on my own. I was able to keep the apartment for a while, but when I got laid off, I went through my savings and lost my home.”

It was then that he turned to Pine Street’s Men’s Inn shelter. “That was a difficult time,” Daryl recounts. “I was in shelter for about six years.”

While in shelter, Daryl worked with his case manager to piece back together his life. “The staff were nice and supportive,” shares Daryl. “My case manager helped me apply for housing.”

In 2018, Daryl moved into Pine Street supportive housing. “I love it in my new home — it’s safe and stable,” he smiles. He particularly enjoys the community within his building. “All of the tenants get along here. Sometimes, we play cards together, and the staff puts on game nights and has other social activities.”

Now 63, Daryl is looking to the future with optimism. “I’m hoping to find some part-time work and spend more quality time with my family,” he shares.  “I’m grateful for the support Pine Street has given me.”
