Bill — Meeting Challenges with Resilience

Bill has always found peace outdoors. “Fishing is my therapy,” he says. “Even when I was younger, that’s where I felt calm.”

Raised in a close-knit family, Bill followed his uncle’s advice to join the National Guard. “I found my community there,” he smiles. “I served 20 years and loved every minute — those were some of the proudest years of my life.”

Alongside his service, Bill worked in manufacturing and as a mechanic, but years of heavy lifting took a toll. “I injured my back, and everything snowballed from there,” he says.

Health complications followed, including an infection requiring ongoing care. Anxiety crept in as medical needs grew and financial stress mounted. “I was in and out of the hospital,” Bill explains. “Eventually, I lost my housing.”

Without a home, Bill returned to the outdoors. “I stayed near the water and went fishing,” he says. “It helped me cope but wasn’t a long-term solution.”

During that time, Emma Reading from Pine Street Inn’s veterans outreach team never stopped showing up. “She brought me food and blankets and never gave up on me,” Bill recalls. Emma helped Bill apply for housing and secure an apartment at a new residence in Dorchester where Pine Street provides support services.

“Bill met every challenge with resilience,” says Emma. “He worked hard throughout the housing process and never lost hope.”

Today, Bill is settling into his new apartment. “I love it here,” he says. “It’s newly renovated and in a good neighborhood.” Living close to the water, he is excited to start fishing again and return to the place that has always brought him peace.
