Pine Street Advocacy

The Massachusetts House and Senate have now completed their respective budgets and a conference committee has been appointed to hammer out a final budget to send to the Governor by July 1, 2018. The good news is that both chambers have appropriated increased funding for homeless individuals!

We are particularly grateful to the Chair of the House Ways and Means Committee, Jeffrey Sanchez from Jamaica Plain, for including $5M in new funding for agencies that assist homeless individuals. Now we need to make sure that money stays there!

Here’s how:

Call you state senator and your state representative. If you don’t know who that is, go to The main number for the State House switchboard is (617) 722-2000.

When you call, you will most likely get a legislative aide. Consider using this sample script:

Hello, my name is (your name) and I live in (your town/city). I’m calling because I support Pine Street Inn, an organization that provides shelter, services and housing to homeless men and women. I am calling to follow up on a letter that your office should have received from the Coalition for Homeless Individuals (CHI). This letter asks that (name of Representative or Senator) reach out to members of the Conference Committee and support two important items.

First, we would like the Conference Committee to concur with the Senate on line item 7004-0102 and secondly, we would like the Conference Committee to concur with the House on a new line item - 7004-0202.

Both these line items would bring new funding to organizations across that state that serve homeless individuals and we really need the funding! Can I count on the (representative/senator’s) support?

On behalf of everyone at Pine Street Inn, including the guests, tenants and individuals who will benefit from this funding, thank you for taking action!
