An Inspiring Innbassador: Avana Anderson

Avana Anderson

Avana Anderson is an Associate in the Boston law office of Morrison Mahoney LLP. She is also a Pine Street Innbassador, our emerging leaders’ network.

How did you become involved with Pine Street Inn?

I was looking for a way to give back, and a colleague introduced me to Pine Street. Once I met some of the staff members of Pine Street Inn, I knew I wanted to spend more time volunteering with this organization. I spoke to a staff member about my interests in working with survivors of domestic violence, helping them navigate the legal and financial issues associated with leaving an abuser.

What are some of the other ways you interact with Pine Street?

I’ve really enjoyed participating in events and leading Resume Building Workshops with the guests.

Last year, I was able to create a partnership between Pine Street and The Well Coffee House, who ultimately donated a portion of an entire month’s revenue. I also organized a few fundraisers at yoga and spin studios to raise money. I have really enjoyed giving people an opportunity to raise money for Pine Street Inn by simply engaging in activities in which they already participate.

I also give presentations on domestic violence to the sheltered guests of Pine Street Inn every four to six weeks – sometimes it’s a larger group, other times there are only one or two people. While I do not provide legal advice, we discuss the various resources that are available to survivors of domestic violence. I truly appreciate Pine Street Inn's initiative to provide fun and creative ways to give back to the community.

What’s the most rewarding part about your volunteerism and involvement as an Innbassador?

Pine Street has had a huge impact on my personal and professional development; I’ve realized that using your skillset in a different capacity can help sharpen those skills and give you a new lens on your work. The Innbassadors is a great group of people. I’ve been able to network and make good friends through the various volunteering events. I would encourage others to think about how they might be able to benefit this great organization!
