Veterans' Services at Pine Street
While veterans only make up 9 percent of our nation's population, they represent 23 percent of homeless Americans. Another 1.5 million veterans are at risk of homelessness.*Pine Street Inn Veterans’ Services connect homeless and low-income individuals with housing opportunities, employment and community services that are specially available to men and women who have served in any branch of the U.S. armed forces.
Often, veterans lack copies of the military records required to receive veterans’ benefits; others need assistance in documenting a disability or upgrading their discharge status before they can receive federal benefits. Others simply haven’t been informed about the programs already available to them.
Veterans’ Services case managers guide their clients through the paperwork, advocate on their behalf, and connect them with helpful resources in the community. The ultimate goal is for veterans to find the stability and support needed to rebuild their lives and to move forward in civilian society.
The Causes of Homelessness Among Veterans
In addition to the complex set of factors that affect most homeless individuals — lack of affordable housing, poverty, job or income loss, mental illness, substance abuse, health problems, etc. — many veterans live with the lingering effect of post-traumatic stress disorder, often compounded by a lack of family and social support networks.

Pine Street has a transitional housing program in Dorchester for 16 homeless veterans, many of whom have been unable to succeed in other settings.

How to Receive Help
Men and women who have served in the U.S. armed forces may receive counseling from Veterans’ Services by calling 617.541.8652 or dropping by their office, 2304 Washington Street in Roxbury’s Dudley Square, Monday through Friday, 9 am – 5 pm. Drop-ins are also welcome at a handicap-accessible location, 434 Harrison Avenue in the South End, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 9 am – 2 pm.Veterans’ Services case managers also perform regular outreach to area shelters (including Pine Street Inn shelters), community centers, hospitals and congregations.
