Job Training & Placement
Each year, approximately 125 men and women graduate from Pine Street’s three job training programs. Trainees learn both the vocational skills and attitudinal skills needed to help them find and maintain employment.
Training participants also work with assigned employment counselors at IMPACT Employment Services
to develop job search plans and to receive assistance with job placements and job retention.
Approximately 50 percent of Pine Street’s job training graduates move on to find employment at a livable wage or enter further training and internship programs. Recent employers that have hired our trainees include: YMCA for Greater Boston, 2b design home, Zoo New England, Intermission Tavern, ServisAir, Guckenheimers Catering, New World Security, Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries, WBZ-TV, The Vitamin Shoppe, Joe’s Bar & Grill, Bertucci’s, South End House of Pizza, KSM Staffing, Winthrop Yacht Club and Babson College.
Food Services Training Program
Founded in 1990, Pine Street’s Food Services Training Program prepares nearly 100 men and women annually for employment in the food services industry. The course is divided into two training sessions: Cafeteria Operations and Food Preparation.
Trainees receive both classroom and practical education in customer service, menu preparation, kitchen safety, food sanitation, weights and measurements, deli/cafeteria operations, salad bar preparation and food production. Trainees work with Pine Street's chefs and professional culinary staff to prepare 2,000 meals each day, and also gain experience serving customers in Pine Street’s staff cafeteria and through our social enterprise iCater.
Building Maintenance Training Program
Each year, the Building Maintenance Training Program trains more than 30 men and women in building maintenance and woodworking. During the 8 - 24 week program, trainees learn skills like painting and basic carpentry — as well as job readiness skills such as showing up on time, professionalism, teamwork and managing responsibilities. Trainees learn on the job while working with our social enterprise Boston HandyWorks.
Housekeeping Training Program
During the 8-week Housekeeping Training Program, trainees receive instruction in floor maintenance, sanitation and safe chemical handling, preparing participants for employment as housekeepers and general service workers.
IMPACT Employment Services
IMPACT Employment Services, located in Downtown Crossing, provides specialized employment services, including assessment, counseling, placement and job retention for more than 600 job-seeking homeless men and women.
Every spring, Pine Street hosts a graduation ceremony for the men and women who completed Pine Street’s job training programs during the prior year. Students wear caps and gowns, receive certificates of achievement and invite family members and friends to celebrate their accomplishment. For many, the event is the first graduation the students have experienced.
Graduates of Pine Street's training programs are encouraged to stay connected and continue to work on career strategies and career development through the Alumni Career Network.
