John Barros was appointed Chief of Economic Development for the City of Boston by Mayor Martin Walsh in February 2014. Before his appointment, he served 13 years as Executive Director of the Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative (DSNI) where he led a successful neighborhood revitalization effort and the largest urban community land trust in the country, founded as a community wealth creation strategy, including affordable housing.
Barros has been a member of the Boston School Committee, the Aspen Institute’s Roundtable on Community Change and Co-Chairperson of the Center for Community Builders. He is a member of the 2005 Fellows class in the South African-United States Center for Leadership and Public Values and in 2007 was named a Barr Foundation Fellow.
Matthew Slater is a wide receiver, safety and special teams player for the New England Patriots. He was drafted by the Patriots in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft after playing college football for the UCLA Bruins. Slater has been named to six straight Pro Bowls from 2011-2016 as a special teams player, and his been elected special teams captain by his teammates from 2011-2016. He regularly supports the community through the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation and was the 2017 recipient of The Athletes in Action Bart Starr Award, given annually to a player who exemplifies character and leadership on and off the field.
