Pine Street Inn

For Pine Street Inn, a labor of love

HINGHAM- On a gusty and sparkling fall morning, three friends gather to do what they've done every month for three years: cook a meal for the 80-100 women who will show up for dinner at the Pine Street Inn the following night.

"It doesn't take as much time as everyone thinks," says Barbara D'Antuono, as she chops fresh rosemary for the roast pork she is making with Maureen Linskey and Judy Belknap. The women are in the spacious kitchen of Belknap's 1842 farmhouse. Each cooking session is done by noon, all the food packaged and ready to drive into Boston.

"They go all out," says Scottie Wait, Pine Street's director of volunteers. "They put a lot of love and care into what they make, and the food on each lady's plate looks lovely." Many community groups and individuals devote extra time to the Inn this time of year, she says, but the regular commitment of the "prepare and serve" groups is crucial. "We know they're going to be here on the third Thursday of the month, and we know we don't have to worry about food that night," she says.
