I started working at Pine Street in 1984, and found the commitment and compassion of staff and volunteers to be impressive and inspiring. The spirit here has not changed in two decades, but much else has. There has been an alarming increase in the city's homeless population. Sadly, tonight more than 6,000 men, women and children will have no place to call home. Since 1980's, Pine Street has grown too, focusing more and more on how to help each guest leave shelter behind. We've addressed two major obstacles for our guests during this time: lack of job skills and scarce affordable housing. The inn has also faced the challenge of reduced government funding and has responded by forging collaborations with other non-profits. My hope is that you will join our community of friends, donors, and volunteers who are working together to combat homelessness.
