Pine Street Inn

All too often, Pine Street's guests struggle to get back on their feet only to discover that housing is beyond their grasp. For many the cost of market-rate housing is a barrier; for others, the difficulty of managing daily life on their own in the face of ill health, old age, or disability makes most housing options unworkable. In response to this need, the inn offers permanent, affordable housing with on-site support staff.

Since 1984, Pine Street Inn has developed permanent residences for homeless individuals (based on the lodging house model) and for families. Pine Street currently has nearly 500 tenants in 28 residences throughout greater Boston. This permanent housing is available for men and women capable of living independently, and specialized housing is open to tenants with a history of mental illness or who are living with HIV/AIDS.

  • Tenants pay up to 30 percent of their annual income (many make less than $9,000 annually) toward their rent. A typical residence includes private rooms with common living areas. On-site staff creates a supportive environment, encouraging independence but keeping residents connected to needed services.

  • Between 2007 and 2008, Pine Street opened five new homes. The Inn is developing more than 130 additional units that are expected to open within the next two years.

  • In April 2007, Pine Street launched an innovative Housing First program for chronically homeless individuals with mental illness. Of the 47 individuals who have been placed in permanent housing through this program, 43 remain housed as of August 2008.
